Light in your Eyes

Charlottesville Engagement Session

You rose into my life like a promised sunrise, brightening my days with the light in your eyes. I’ve never been so strong. Now I’m where I belong.

One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to know my couples personally and hearing their stories of how they fell in love. Every couple is unique and all their stories can range from sweet, passionate, funny, and all of the above! Melanie and Cagle definitely have the sweetest story and some pretty funny moments sprinkled in there. ;)

Melanie and Cagle first met the summer before their fourth year in college (2008) while working at UVA in the school fitness center. Melanie was Cagle’s supervisor. Cagle was attracted to Melanie’s smart (and sometimes sassy) wit, and the fact that she did not rigorously enforce the fitness center’s employee dress code. Melanie enjoyed spending the day bantering with Cagle, and the best part of her day was when, after his shift, Cagle left the gym shirtless for his daily run (so he says). LOL!

On graduation night, they had a chance encounter at the local late-night spot on UVA’s “Corner,” called The White Spot. Cagle ordered the famed Gusburger, which he quickly realized he could not eat.  As he turned to leave the restaurant, Melanie and some friends were entering, and Cagle happily gave the Gusburger to her.  Although they went their separate ways that evening, that was “the Gusburger that started it all.” That summer, they started to date!

At the end of 2014, Melanie and Cagle went on an incredible trip to Paris! Cagle decided to propose to Melanie in the City of Light! Based on Melanie’s enthusiasm for French history and all-things Marie Antoinette, he decided Versailles would be an appropriate spot. Unfortunately, Cagle came down with the flu the night before the planned trip to Versailles and was laid up all the next day delaying their trip. With their time in Paris drawing to a close, Cagle—aided by French over-the-counter medicine--summoned his strength to make the trip from the heart of the city to Versailles on New Year’s Eve Day. They walked down the terraces outside towards the lake and gardens of the estate.  Cagle was very insistent that they find someone who spoke English to take their picture.  Cagle found an American couple with kids to take their picture, but in reality he put his phone on video mode to record the proposal.  He then got down on one knee and proposed, and Melanie said yes!

The coolest part of that amazing proposal is that they found out that the American couple was actually in Paris to celebrate their own 25th wedding anniversary. I think that is an excellent foreshadowing of their many years of happiness in their future! I look forward to photographing their wedding day this May and creating images they can enjoy for years to come!
